Refactoring Gender Bias, One Commit at a Time
I recently had the pleasure of co-talking with Giulia Naponiello, Senior Software Engineer at Red Hat, about gender bias in technology at two local meetup events. The talk, titled "Rifattorizziamo i bias di genere, un commit alla volta" (Refactoring Gender Bias, One Commit at a Time), explored how unconscious prejudices subtly manifest in tech workplaces.
We shared personal stories and examined how bias shows up in everyday situations — from code review language to hiring assessments, from recognition of technical authority to team dynamics. The goal wasn't to point fingers, but to shine a light on those "cultural bugs" we all carry, and suggest ways to fix them. Think of it as refactoring: same codebase, better output. 🐛➡️✅
